Exit & Emergency Lighting

Life-Safety Lighting That Works When It Matters Most

Exit signs and emergency lighting are not optional — they are life-safety systems required by fire code in virtually every commercial building. They must be installed correctly, maintained properly, and tested regularly. Charm City Electric installs, maintains, and tests emergency lighting systems for commercial properties throughout Baltimore.

Code Requirements

The International Fire Code (IFC) and NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) require illuminated exit signs and emergency lighting in all commercial occupancies. Exit signs must be continuously illuminated and have battery backup to remain lit for at least 90 minutes during a power failure. Emergency lighting must provide at least 1 foot-candle of illumination on the path of egress for 90 minutes.

Installation and Placement

Proper placement of exit signs and emergency lights is critical. Signs must be visible from every point in the egress path, and emergency lights must be positioned to illuminate stairs, corridors, and exit discharges without dark areas. We design the placement based on your floor plan and ensure compliance with all applicable codes.

Testing and Maintenance

NFPA 101 requires monthly 30-second tests and annual 90-minute full-duration tests of all emergency lighting. We offer maintenance contracts that include scheduled testing, battery replacement, and documentation of test results — the records your building inspector and insurance carrier will want to see.
